Strengthening Routine Immunization data systems through digital innovation and capacity development.

The Strategic Information and Technology project is a long-standing digital health initiative designed to strengthen routine immunization (RI) data systems in Nigeria through improved data availability, accessibility, quality, and government ownership.

Since 2014, the project has supported the development and deployment of technological innovations that enhance data visualization, reporting, and use for action. By strengthening national and subnational health information systems, the project enables evidence-based decision-making and supports more effective planning, monitoring, and accountability across immunization programs.

health workers trained on effective use of DHIS2 for RI reporting

  • Nationwide adoption of the DHIS2 Routine Immunization module across all states

  • Over 6,000 health workers trained on effective use of DHIS2 for RI reporting

  • Electronic defaulter tracking system piloted and scaled in Bayelsa State

  • Improved malaria vaccine uptake through reduced dropout rates

Technical and Implementation Approach

Implementation focuses on strengthening existing government data platforms rather than creating parallel systems. The project prioritizes interoperability, user-friendly design, and scalability, ensuring that digital solutions can be adopted, maintained, and owned by government institutions.

Data visualization tools and dashboards are developed to support real-time analysis and decision-making at national, state, and LGA levels.
