AFENET, the network of sub-Saharan African FETPs, is a strong promoter of epidemiologic research and publication. Scientific writing is a core competency of the Nigeria FELTP.

Residents are required to share the results of their research and field investigations through publications in scientific journals.

April 8-12, 2019, AFENET conducted a Scientific Writing Workshop to help residents and recent graduates improve draft manuscripts towards submission to journals.
Experienced facilitators and mentors from AFENET and the two collaborating universities – ABU and UI – provide hands-on guidance and technical support.

Dr Aisha Sani Faruk, Medical Doctor, State Ministry of Health, Kano State was encouraged by a colleague of hers who had participated in AFENET – NFELTP Scientific Writing Workshop to write a draft of a manuscript and submit. She eventually did, and her work was one of the 24 that was selected among the 67 that submitted. After the 5-day scientific writing workshop, Dr Aisha had this to say;

“have learnt a lot! I have learnt a lot!! I have learnt a lot!!! The best thing I learnt, is to finally refine the manuscript, especially the abstract because it is the summary of the work. My advice to all public health researchers is that this 5-day workshop is just the first stepping stone in scientific writing. It is essential for one to undergo this workshop before publication. Thank you to AFENET. Thank you NFELTP. Thank you NSTOP”
