An estimated 100 million cases of malaria
with over 300, 000 deaths occur every year in Nigeria. Proven interventions
include prompt and adequate case management, behavioral change communication,
and the use of insecticide-treated nets.

However, the
knowledge gap on current methods and best practices for implementing malaria interventions
has equally been a major problem at the national and especially at the sub-national
levels.

The Nigeria
Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Programme, supported by AFENET
Nigeria in conjunction with the President’s Malaria Initiative and the National
Malaria Elimination Programme, (NMEP) conducted a three-month Malaria
Short Course
to build the capacity of programme managers and other officers
involved in malaria control. The first cohort of 26 participants from 7 states
and the NMEP graduated on the 3rd of April 2019.
