Publication has been described as the currency of public health practice.  The maxim ‘publish’ or ‘perish’ is a reminder of the importance of publication. To achieve this goal, a five-day writing workshop was organized by NFELTP from 17th-23rd of July 2017. Facilitators and mentors from the Universities (University of Ibadan and Ahmadu Bello University) as well as AFENET program supervisors were invited to support the NFELTP residents/graduates to develop manuscripts from their University thesis, outbreak investigations and secondary data analysis reports. Dr. Rebecca Babirye; the grant management officer from AFENET Head office in Uganda was also one of the facilitators.

The workshop aimed to impart knowledge and scientific writing skills to participants and ultimately to ensure final publication of manuscripts in high impact peer reviewed journals. Participants had series of lectures on various sections of a manuscript, publication ethics, use of reference managers, and experienced researchers including Professors from Universities and mentors from the NFELTP programs from within and outside Nigeria facilitated the sessions. Participants were assigned mentors to work with during the practical sessions and to ensure each participant finalize their draft manuscripts. A total of 27 draft manuscripts were drafted and reviewed during the workshop. Finalized manuscripts that will inform public health actions on topical issues including HIV/AIDs, Malaria, Immunization, Outbreak investigations and surveillance system evaluation are expected to be published in peer review journals in September 2017.  The workshop was coordinated by Prof. Idris Suleiman; the NFELTP program scientific writer.
